We are starting to see a lot of companies featuring big ticket bands in their PR efforts. At CES 2006, I had a chance to see the Killers at a Microsoft / MTV after party, CES 2007 brought 3 Doors Down in for a free 1 hour acoustic concert (which my video was removed from Soapbox for copyright violation recently. MY VIDEO THAT I SHOT. Oh well.), but nothing beats the event that Sandisk put on a few weeks ago. Linkin Park in an intimate envoirment was very sweet.
Well, the newest is Alltel Wireless and the Goo Goo Dolls joining up to offer a free concert for 2000 or so in Phoenix. Unfortunately, I will not get a chance to take up this invite, but I am sure others will have a blast. The Goo Goo Dolls are an awesome band. Read on for the press release...
Alltel Wireless rocks Phoenix with free Goo Goo Dolls concert
Alltel hosts show to thank Phoenix area residents
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – With three number one hits and 14 consecutive top 10s, The Goo Goo Dolls are one of the most successful bands of the past twenty years. Now Alltel Wireless, America’s largest network, is bringing the Grammy-nominated band to the Valley for a free concert to thank the community for their support and to celebrate Alltel’s tremendous year of growth in the region. Area residents are invited to attend the show on Saturday, December 8, at 5:30 p.m. at the Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza.
“With Alltel’s tremendous growth in the Valley, we wanted to celebrate by hosting a concert to thank residents for such a great year,” said Scott Thompson, vice president of retail services for Arizona. “We hope everyone comes down to Civic Center Plaza to experience this great band.”
In addition to The Goo Goo Dolls concert, Alltel Wireless is also offering Valley residents the new MOTOROKR Z6m for only $79.99, plus 50 free songs with the purchase of an accessory kit of $29.99 while supplies last. The phone offer is available to new customers who sign a two-year service agreement and to eligible existing customers on qualifying rate plans through January 12, 2008.
Gates open at 4:00 p.m., and Alltel is recommending fans arrive early, as the venue has a capacity of 2,000 for this special event. While there, concert attendees will be able to experience Alltel’s one-of-a-kind Freedom Rig, a traveling 53-foot mobile vehicle where customers can sample unique services and products.
The band recently released “The Goo Goo Dolls Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 – The Singles,” which includes three of their number one hits “Iris,” “Name” and “Slide,” in addition to a record 14 Adult Top 40 songs, “Black Balloon,” “Broadway,” “Better Days” and “Give a Little Bit.” Additionally, a rarities CD/DVD collection is planned for release in early 2008.
John Rzeznik, lead singer for The Goo Goo Dolls, added, “The fans in Phoenix have always been among the best in the country, and we are psyched to come back and play this special show.”
Alltel is currently experiencing tremendous growth throughout the Phoenix area. There are over 20 Alltel Wireless retail locations throughout the Valley, and Alltel is planning to open five additional stores before year end with five stores currently scheduled to open in 2008.
Alltel Wireless offers features including "My Circle,” allowing customers to choose who they call for free – any 10 numbers, any network; Anytime Plan Changes, giving customers the flexibility to change their rate plan any time, without extending their contract; and Celltop, a patent-pending technology, offering customers an easier way to access, manage and organize a wide range of information already available on their phones.

Not really a surprise that companies are doing these kinds of things these days. When you think about it, it’s almost like everyone wins.
A shame I’m not particularly a GGD fan.
Interesting article though.
Cool concert!!! I need to move to a more exciting place. You never hear about great free concerts in Indiana. Just lots of corn here….
Glad to see companies are doing something like this.
I hear you Heatwave316, nothing happens hear in Oklahoma that much either.
We have lots of concers here in Puerto Rico..but the tickets are expen$ive as hell! i havent gone to one in a while but im invited to see Papa Roach tonight(ticket cost $300, no way i could afford that)
There’s no way I’d pay 300 dollars to see Papa Roach. Makes the folks over at Alltel seem like Santa Claus.
Free concerts happen on occasion here in Toronto. I can’t complain.
Yay for free concerts, meh for it being GGD, hope there are more though.
Chris,
The copyright infringement wasn’t on YOUR video, it was on the content… the performance… you were infringing on their copyright. Just because you took the video doesn’t mean you can do as you please with it.
