There are lots of ways to get music onto your Zune. I will cover 4 of these ways in this post. This is for the community as well as a reference for member of the Zune.net forums.
Rip a CD
This is a no brainer, but since there is no guide within the software, i'll show you. When the Zune Software is loaded there are 4 upper tabs above the music category. Collection, Device, Marketplace, and Social. Put a CD into your computer and this screen pops up in Vista. Notice you have a choice for Zune to play or rip. Pick Rip or close this window out and go to the 2nd way. (which is also the 1st way, but initiating the rip from the software.
Once you put an audio CD into your drive, the Zune Software recognizes that and adds a tab along side the Collection, Device, Marketplace, and Social tabs called disc. Click that tab and you'll see this below.
From here you can see the contents and album art of this CD. Under the song list, click rip and follow along.
The next way is to add music from your computer that you have already downloaded or ripped before. You will need to know where this music is. I personally keep all my music in one directory on my 500gb My Book external drive.
In your Zune Software go to Settings:Software:Collection and you will see the above look. Here you can remove or add directories for the software to look for music. Once you tell it to look where your music is, it will add it to the collection automaticly. Sync your Zune and Zoom Zoom.
The next way is probaly the easiest, but most expensive. Buy the music from the Marketplace. You can buy the songs or albums outright or get a Zune Pass and download all you want for $15/mo... That's all!
So if I want to buy this talented artists CD, I would just click buy next to the album art or just buy singles to the right of the actual song.

thats a big my book.
Chris you are getting me all worked up when i see there is a new post, i keep think its the give away
I am up to over a TB of storage capacity with both of my externals and my internals. That’s not mentioning the other networked drives on my other machines.
I keep all music on my hard drive too. Safer that way.
I seem to be collecting huge hard drives, and I’m constantly filling them up. This Black Friday I plan to get myself another 500 GB external hard drive so I can keep my music, photos, and videos/DVDs.
As for how I get music on my computer, I usually rip “Best of” CDs. It’s the best value for your buck and you’re sure to get all good songs on the entire album.
Thanks for the info! I’ve got everything on my hard drive. God forbid something should happen, and then *gasps* I drop my zune out of a 4 story building like the other guy. Ptcha. P.s Haha, Soulja boy Tell em
I did back my collection up on a dvd though so if the hard drive goes I have a backup.
I haven’t put much music on my Zune 30 since the upgrade so I cant speak to any changes they made in the process.
For the love of heaven… AVOID hard drives made by Maxtor!
i download my music from frostwire. i used ti be able to drag and drop my song in the old ZUNE setup, but the new one, its just wont let me
=.[
help!?!?!
Kayla, put this music into a seperate folder, then go onto the new zune software, go to settings(top right corner), then collection. In the collection menu you should see different category’s, go to music and add the folder where you have your music. This should then begin auto-syncing from their.
wow this an old post.
