A tale of two super sized gadget blogs...
Ryan Block of Engadget and Jason Chen from Gizmodo have different outlooks on the whole Zune thing.
To start off, if you don't remember, Ryan Block had one hell of a time getting the software to work for him last year with the Zune 30 launch. I am not making excuses for him, but I am sure that is still on his mind, especially since it wasn't a wide spread problem.
Well Ryan goes off on the software 1st and foremost. He complains about the lack of Mac Support. Now, I have to believe that the market share of MAC OWNERS that would consider buying a Zune has to be very small and most likely not worth the development cost. I am not slamming Apple Users, but the core Mac User Base or at least the Apple folks I know, would never consider buying a Micro$oft product.
All and all, Ryan says no to Zune... Not worth it. He recommends other non-ipod choices instead. Read Ryan's Take.
Now, the Gizmodo guy that likes to shove things into his pants likes Zune and recommends them.
Check out Jason Chen's Take too!

I will have to agree with Ryan since I have a Macbook Pro and my Home pc doesn’t get much use any more. Microsoft makes some of my favorite products I just need my Macbook for school and since I am always doing homework I have not use the Pc in some time. Although I will be updating the OS from Windows ME to Windows Xp Home soon I hope anyway. I need to ask my friend if he can bring his Xp over since he isn’t using it. But if I was able to use the Zune software with ease on my mac it would be godly. I have no problem with caring over all my music to the pc and setting things up for a Zune. Thats really my only problem in it even is one.

I read a very good comment some where (sorry I forgot where I read, most probably on digg) that goes like this.
Mac has 10% market share and most Mac users just love Apple products they don’t want anything but apple (I don’t want to start a flame here), but let’s say of that 10% market only 10% are interested in buying a zune, that will be a very small number and Microsoft will be losing money considering they may have spend at least a good 6 months developing the Zune Marketplace software.
And after writing that, he got annihilated by everyone that read his completely biased review, to the point where he cried like a little baby and closed the comments section.
Also Mac only had an 8% market share in October, not 10%. It is true though, everyone knows that Mac users are hard headed pompous people that will only use other Apple products to ’stick it to the man’ or to some how ‘think different’ (even though buying an iPod is being a sheep like nothing else). Point is, not giving Mac support isn’t a disregard to the Apple community, its looking at it from a business investment sense. The software dev costs outweigh the returns they would receive from those people that only buy Macs because they bought iPods. Good point vaibhavk.
[…] My thoughts from yesterday still stand. Mainly the critism about the lack of Mac Support. Apple making iTunes PC compatible was a nessisity for Apple. PC Users outnumber Mac users by ~10:1. Getting the iTunes going with MOST of the computer users is a must. Like I said yesterday, development cost to make Zune Mac Compatible may not be feasible based on the small percentage of Mac users that would actually buy a Microsoft product other than Office. I may be wrong here, but I am fairly sure economics drive this choice. ShareThis Filed under: Zune Commentary […]

My biggest criticism of the new Zune software is that after updating my Zune 30 some of the artist are now listed under the wrong albums. There were various fixes listed on the offical Zune forums but none seem to work for me. I’m a big fan of the new Zune software but it does seem to have a few kinks that need to be worked out.
Cnet gave it an 8.3 that is the hightest rating they have ever givin a hard drive player and it is the same as the ipod touch. Thats all i care about and besides they gave some not so great ratings to the zune 30 but i did not care i still loved it
