I love it when you see success especially after a lot of hard work. Looking good and a series of features that people want will make this device a popular holiday gift. So when I saw this piece on Electronista indicating that the Zune was the 2nd most popular in online Black Friday, I had to share the story with you.
Microsoft’s Zune series was beaten only by the core video game market in terms of online sales for the Black Friday weekend following Thanksgiving, say studies from multiple online retailers. PriceGrabber, Shopping.com, and auction site eBay all report the Zune occupying the second place position behind the Nintendo Wii and similarly high-profile consoles and their games. Most of this is split between the old Zune 30 and the newer Zune 80, according to the claims. Part of this is believed to be connected to the low cost and upgradability Zune 30, which has frequently been selling near half price at $100 but can also be upgraded to the same improved interface as the latest players.
In the final analysis, only time will tell how it does in the overall market but I tend to believe that it will prove to be wildly popular.

This is really exciting news. Now the only thing the zune team needs to do is come around and add some of the most wanted features by the end of the year and the zune will just take off.
If we look at the features some of the reviewers have given negative points for there aren’t that many.
wow! you have added some really sleek features to the website over the past couple of days. Great job, and thanks for making our experience better by the day.
I think the inevitable raise of the zune is finally starting…if we continue this way i think we really have a good choice of passing the Ipod in the near future
yeah this sounds about right. There is some really good buzz and demand. Not to mention the device has had a huge update physically and with its software.
This was to be expected.
As much as I would love that, it stands no chance of passing the iPod in the near future… in the distant future, possibly. But think in years, not months.
Yeah Leif, Thats what i mean. As i have said before i think is gonna take us until the 5th zune to pass them, but we just in the 2nd edition and we are all ready making some ground so its a sign of good things are going to come for the zune in the future.
Oh right, fair enough
I must agree with you though, iPod finally has competition, hopefully this will fuel them to do better as well and visa-versa.
I’m thinking that if the sales volume is due to cut-price 30 GB models, then Apple doesn’t really have much to worry about for a long, long time.
Leif, you never know with Microsoft. They have a nack of turning things around within 3 iterations. I am not talking one or two examples, there are numerous products where they came from behind and atleast matched the competition within 3 iterations. I am sure no one imagined they would get a complete opposite review within one year.
Does not mean it will happen to Zune, but there is a very good chance. It may not happen soon, but I am sure we won’t have to wait until gen 5.
Just my two cents.
I also agree with you, Gen 5 was not my estimate, if you want my estimate I’d say either in three updates to the current software (to add new features) or with the next gen (gen 3) device.

(I just agreed before that they are competition in the long run, but not anytime soon)
See that’s what I hate about the Zune team. They just sat there from Zune 1 without any major updates until they released Zune 2. Now we know why, but I think frequent updates and they will catch up in no time.
I have a good feeling that the Zunepad is here to stay for a long time which means they may have all the features we want plus games and other addons in the future. I just hope they don’t sit mum for another year.
I can’t wait until the Zune 80s come out for the general public to purchase. I’d like to see if Microsoft indeed has a hit on their hands.
@vaibhavk
I agree with you. The site is getting really good. I love how now you can edit your comments for the first 9 minutes or so. I also like how you can subscribe to the post’s comments when you post a comment. Great job, Chris!
This is great ’cause now the zune is as popular as it should be
Go Zune. Waiting for the Zune 80 to be available on www.zuneoriginals.net
