You read here yesterday about how Apple bought out one of its fansites and how they censor they forums, right?
Well how about this, they are also buying up Zune related keywords to pimp their wares. Doesn't that kinda fall into the using your competitor's business name in your meta tag category?
Anyhow, Jason Dunn from Zune Thoughts caught this one yesterday...
Yes, that is an Apple iPod ad coming up on the word Zune. Too Funny.

WOW!!! That is shady! Is this a sign that Apple might be worried??? Me thinks it might be so.
I would think that this incident would indicate that there are a lot of searches for Zune on different sites. If people aren’t searching for it or looking at pages related to the Zune, apple would have no interest in those keyword ads. At the least, it’s a subtle admission by apple that people are interested in the Zune and apple sees it as a situation where attention needs to be redirected back at the iPod.
It’s well known that the zune is one of the most searched for products this holiday season.
Why would a Juggernaut like Apple even care.
No big surprise here. Apple has long been known for shady sales and marketing tactics. In fact the Federal Trade Commission has stepped in, on a number of occasions, and forced them to stop some of their tactics.
And yes, this looks like they are starting to panic! They have completely lost the "buzz" in the marketplace, and everyone is talking about the Zune. iPod is still outselling Zune by a healthy margin. But just the fact that Zune is now a common part of the vocabulary of the marketplace has GOT to be threatening to them. And given Jobs’ normally high level of paranoia, they must be having to pump him full of lithium at this point!
That’s actually somewhat of a shocker. I’m not a fan of Apple’s products but I really thought they were above and beyond that kind of marketing. It’s kind of funny, actually.
I don’t think that Jobs is worried at all, I just think that this is a little thing they’re doing, probably just for shits and giggles.
I really thought they were above and beyond that kind of marketing.
HAHAHA! thats funny. Apple is god, therefor they are above the rules-Book of Steve 6:3
I agree with FatalFlaw, I thought that Apple was more of the innocent kinda underdog, while MS was the conniving kinda superpower.
I guess now that Apple is dominating the mp3 realm, they gotta take over.
I agree with the others. Apple has finally seen that they have a real competitor, and they are hitting below the belt. Apple treats their ‘fans’ terrible, as well. I don’t get the Apple worship…
Why does everyone feel it necessary to flame Apple. Microsoft is just as guilty of shady tactics over the last twenty years. So are tens of thousand of other businesses. You could look into most companies and find it doing something that the public would find morally/ethically questionable.
On the subject of Zune vs Ipod. I currently own a Zune 80GB, ipod touch 16Gb, ipod 5.5G 30GB, iriver clix2 4GB and a Cowon A2 30GB. Out of all these the ones that hav the easiest to use software, tightest integration between store and device, and solid design are my ipods. I prefer the zune pad over the click wheel, but the Zune (which I really like) feels like a toy and doesn’t have the build quality that ipods have. And how has Apple lost the "Buzz" They are expected to sell 25 million ipods this quarter. That doesn’t sound like losing "buzz" to me.
I like my Zune but the Zune marketplace software is terrible and the build quality of the Zune is not up to par with that of ipods. A few more iterations of Zune and I think Apple may have something healthy needed competition.
Man, I hate those stupid pop-up ads! The first thing that I install on any machine that I use is an ad blocker that blocks those stupid things. There is absolutely nothing worse than inadvertently moving your mouse past one of those links while you are trying to read content and have the stupid ad flash over the text.I’m thinking that Apple was pretty smart to buy up ads on the Zune name. At least they didn’t link to a manure delivery service or something.
Lol, very late.. but isn’t it apple always trying to make microsoft look bad?(such as the "buy a mac" commercials) and now their doing this sort of stuff… lol!
I love there buy a mac commercials they are really.
