Advantages: Larger hard drive than older version -- 80 gigabytes, up from 30; larger 3.2-inch glass screen; touchpad button, replacing the button-within-a-button controller
Disadvantages: Grid of pixels on screen sometimes distractingly visible; communicates only with PCs; won't play copy-protected music purchased on iTunes.
Don't look now, but Microsoft might finally be getting the hang of hardware.
Microsoft's new, second-generation Zune music/photo/video player is a pleasure to use. It fixes a long list of things that made the original Zune such a pathetic wannabe. Best of all, the new Zune is starting to develop its own identity.
Orlando Sentinal (by David Pogue)
The 2nd story is a surprising story because of the writer. Pogue has been a habitual Windows Mobile basher and he wasn't too pleased with Microsoft's Gen 1 Zune.

LOL!
They are two people who I don’t trust to review a MSFT product - Walt Mossberg and David Pogue! When I read their reviews, it’s like listening to the teacher on Charlie Brown/Peanuts "Wahh wahh wah wah wahh wahh wahh" or rather "Apple apple apple apple apple apple"
Hey man they’re starting to come around.
It’s really hard to deny that this new zune is one fine player. I mean what other alternative is there. (the Sansa View is good and all but it feels cheap in the the hand and the software is not pleasant to look at)
Why should my Zune review be surprising? Your post makes it sound like I give anything from Microsoft a bad review. That’s absurd (not to mention insulting).
You say that I “bash” Windows Mobile, as though it doesn’t deserve the poor review. Is it just possible that I panned Windows Mobile because it’s BAD? And that I gave Zune a good review because it’s actually GOOD?
NOBODY gets a free ride from me. Not Apple, not nobody. If you think that I give Apple a free ride (and here I’m referring to commenter Tablet PC User above), you should see this Web page:

Read the 40 counter-examples there, and then let me know if you still think Apple gets special treatment from me.

Well Mr. Pogue (actual person or not), I’m standing by my words. Every article I’ve read from you strongly suggest that you are sympathetic towards Apple.
Considering how many people have suggested that you are an apple fanboy, the burden of proof is on you to convince us that you aren’t. Your websites do not help me to believe that you are neutral on Apple / MSFT.
Tablet User, before I replied, I made sure that this wasn’t an overzealous fanboy. There were a couple things about that post that made me think that it might not be him. I promptly shot him an email to confirm, and he replied that it was.
I was just working on my 100th YouTube video, which is a comparison video of the Zune 80 and the iPod Classic 80. While I was gather questions from comments on previous videos, I got his email response. Then notification of your reply above.
Anyhow, I do not typically read David Pouge’s articles unless it relates to Windows Mobile. He has been quite harsh in his words about WinMo.
I do want to apologize for the comment as we tend to forget that the guys we bash are people too. I don’t retract my opinion about his Windows Mobile dislikes, but I did gain a level of respect for him as a person knowing that he is willing to reply to the critisms of him and his writings.
The URL his linked in his comment does address this fanboy label he has and will have a hard time getting removed. I will give him props for addressing those issues.
While I don’t have to agree with his opinions, they are his and he is entitled to them. Just as we are entitled to ours.
ps. my Fanboy Disclosure is here.
zune can play itunes bought music u just have to have the right program i have one and it transfered 170 songs from my purchased library to my zune software just google remove protection from wmv files
"While I don’t have to agree with his opinions, they are his and he is entitled to them. Just as we are entitled to ours."
Here here! Most of the reviews I read won’t keep me from buying certain things. Reviews only help, hands on is what makes it for me.
Oh I’m no fanboy by any means. I’ve used Apple and PC/MSFT products for several years and I can see the pros and cons of both.
I’m impressed that David Pogue did reply. Yes, he is a real person and I don’t think that any of my comments insults his humanity.
zune is definately in the runnings now after apple created the crap they call "ipod classic" i personally liked apple and didn’t care much for zune at the beginning of the summer but after i bought the classic and saw how many bugs and how many defects it had it changed my mind so apple pretty much lost a customer this summer
David Pogue u sound like a good man that speaks your mind we could be friends
I am just glad to see some great reviews about the Zune.. I wanna see some more great reviews like these.
Austin’s post made me chuckle.
This one part of Pogue’s review was troubling:
“the Zune store offers an optional $15-a-month all-you-can download plan, although you lose your entire music library when you stop paying.”
That’s quite unfair, and very inconvenient. Is that to say I would be unable to copy the songs elsewhere before unsubscribing?
yeah im not trying be a ipod basher because i have a gen2 nano and i personally love it never had a problem with it. although my friend has a gen3 nano and he is in denial abou the problems he has with his he says they’re suppossed to happen and his screen like flashes off every once in a while… haha
