When the Zune was first introduced there was plenty of skepticism about its adoption into the consumer electronics world. Market research groups such as HitWise indicated that during the holiday season there was a large jump of visitors to Zune.net. Then Zune users speculated over whether Microsoft would be producing a Zune Phone, which was quickly squelched early on by Bill Gates during the CES 2008.
Zune has been toted as the “iPod Killer” and is slowly climbing up the ladder. So what else is Microsoft trying to kill?
The OnStar Killer: I found that Microsoft might be working on an OnStar (safety and
recovery system installed on GM vehicles) style device that will monitor and communicate a vehicle’s diagnostics data. Which will be quite difficult to conquer, since I have spoken to a local radio personality that has visited the OnStar facility. Sworn to secrecy by a non-disclosure agreement, told me that they take their call center very seriously, which
“[it] resembles a NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) facility, with large displays monitoring all of their customers simultaneously, just like in the spy movies.”
The Vague Wireless Chain: How about linking all of your devices together to access the internet, including your MP3 player? Maybe even a wireless Zune MarketPlace connection or a kiosk system (possibly a Surface PC feature)?
The Blackberry Killer: The draft patents submitted to the US Patent Office were just updated on January 17th, which describes a handset with semi-translucent finish. This looks to be much of a Blackberry killer than an iPhone killer but, none the less, they are continuing to work on this. But what is it really? Let me know your thoughts.

I would have to agree with what the title says. It’s more of a MS phone than a "zune phone" hell why not right? On the OnStar thing, who knows. It might be something MS is thinking about. They have started the "sync" in the new Ford models so a service like OnStar could be something added later. OnStar is GM so whatever MS starts will more likely be Ford. Could happen.
Microsoft has to make a Zune Phone who is like Open Source. Every Smartphone company may produce a Zune Phone if its based on Microsofts basic device and if it has the Zune Phone Software.
Hmm, i’m seeing microsoft making a phone that incorperates zune, maybe with a section devoted to it, but no where in the near future will we see a zune phone for sure. I think though, at some point we will see a zune phone, just not any time soon.
I agree with kaseyart it is probably gonna be more like a microsoft phone than a zune phone. I think it will be a long way away until we see it though. It is almost certain that it will have some sort of music capability though.
I see a phone that will incorporate a little of everything…
I don’t see microsoft coming out with an incompetent product…just something to get on the market….i see them taking their time with this…and really making a splash….
Ya i think thats exactly what they will do. But they have just made stuff to get it on the market before for example Windows Vista i like it but some people think it was just rushed on the market. The zune 1 was kinda rushed to get it out. I think it is a pretty solid product but other people think otherwise.
Will there be a MS phone?
yes, it’s called Windows Mobile.
Will MS make phone hardware?
I doubt it. Prolly just a partnership…
Why is everything with MS or Zune a XXX-killer….???
ya ACE is kinda right. They already have a microsoft phone. But they might make there own phone hardware and all. Probably different from windows mobile.
@adamross55:He may be kinda right but in the same time he’s kinda wrong as well,if that makes any sense at all.Microsoft is not a synonymous to Windows!!!What that fuzz about the new MS phone is all about has nothing to do with the operation system, which i’m pretty sure we all know it’s gonna be windows, but with the hardware itsself.I’m pretty sure MS feels ready by now to take that step needed to built their own hardware. So in the end, let’s just wait and see what they’ll come up with.My hopes on what i wanted it to be are posted again so not gonna writing them down right now.But god’s my witness….i really can’t wait for it to come out and give it a shot [though i’m not a huge fan of windows mobile :p ]
oh and about it being open source,as someone above already mentioned [Korneel],i couldn’t agree more on that.I’d love to see individuals and companies jump on board with it and makin amazing apps for it
Afterall this is a huge MS legacy.Leave people do their thing and have their products compatible with MS ones
As for the OnStar thing,i’ve heard about that but i really got no clue on if and when this is actually gonna come to the market.
azaas: ya i know what you are saying but it probably will run on windows which im am also not TWO fond of but its ok. I think it is certain they will make there own hardware also
