I am shocked about reading all this today, but we have been hearing the rumors for the last couple years. It's a natural fit in my opinion. I like the idea.
Even though I use Google for my searching needs, I use so many Yahoo services that are offered. Yahoo has so much to offer. (did you know they own Flickr now too?) My history with Yahoo goes back to the old days of the text directory. It was the only way I could reach ESPN since ESPN's url had like 5 dots in the url. (this was in like 1994) I have had and still use my Yahoo email address since the same timeframe. I participate in a couple Yahoo groups. I use people search all the time. Yahoo Music, etc... Yahoo is my homepage as well. The point is I love Yahoo and I am so thrilled at the prospect of them being bought out by Microsoft. What do you think?

I like many of yahoo’s services too. That’s why I’m a little hesitant about a possible merger. I’m afraid Microsoft will ruin a good thing.
I Guess I don’t mind that much either way, I think if they buy it though they need to make sure to incorporate zune somehow..
Clearly Yahoo has been having issues, and clearly Microsoft is struggling to gain market share against Google. Yahoo has a lot of brand equity - when I started using the internet, Yahoo was the directory of it; then we all switched to AltaVista, then Lycos, then Google. While this can only help Microsoft and Yahoo, I don’t see this being anything that Google has to worry about. What it will do is consolidate Yahoo or Microsoft as the number 2 search engine, and they should be in pretty decent financial shape. It remains to be seen if Microsoft can manage Yahoo’s assets any better than they have been managed, but my gut feels is that it should be a positive move. There have been rumors that Microsoft was going to buy for many months now, and I think that Microsoft is buying when the time is right - the stock is down, quarterly results are disappointing, projected next quarter are also disappointing for Yahoo. In short, the price should stay low, and I doubt that anybody else will find Yahoo valuable enough to trump Microsoft’s premium offer.
I think this is fantastic! usually i use google for pretty much everything but I think microsoft can do some great things with yahoo and make it better than it already is. Well lets hope things go well and microsoft doesnt screw it up. I dont think they will but you never know.
I wonder whether the Yahoo! Music Unlimited service will be canceled or folded into the Zune Pass somehow.
Since Zune Marketplace works only with the Zune, and Yahoo Music works with Plays For Sure devices, I’d think that they would not merge the services.
i think this is stupid..
they are just investing more money and more money on something when they have a problem right in front of their faces. The making of zune. Microsoft should wake up and not waste 40 million dollars on yahoo at the moment… not the right time..
wait if they do buy it..
SBC YAHOO DSL
is still SBC YAHOO DSL
and not
SBC GOOGLE DSL
right?
I think it is a good time to buy it. It should reel in a lot of money for microsoft (like they need anymore!)
I really like and hate the idea of MS going after yahoo. It looks like Microsoft is in the middle of some changes on company’s mentality and aim.
In the early days there used to be boundaries between those companies that were providing software/hardware and those companies that provided services.Nowdays those boundaries seem to be gone.Apple taking an enormous step into internet service field [itunes music/movie/tv shows store]. Now Microsoft thinking about taking over Yahoo!!!If they manage to buy it they will become the world’s most popular email service and they might take those steps needed to make yahoo search a real competitor to google search.
With those boundaries gone both software and hardware companies shall be able to co-develop their primary product and internet services field, with all the positive and negative effects that this will have.
Because there could indeed be some negatives in that, but imo, those would have to do with the “smaller” companies.Maybe what we faced in real life economy, meaning the small companies being on the verge of “extinction”,is about to happen in internet companies as well.A previous article said that Microsoft is after Logitech and i really wouldn’t like to see such a reliable company getting off the map.Having 100 people to innovate on internet and on software/hardware is far better than having just a couple of them.Smaller companies have contributed,if not more, then equally to what MS and Apple have.
There are many things to write on that, many doubts and many hopes, but since this is already too long and i don’t want to torture you [lol] with a thorough economic analysis,i won’t mention anything more.
Being a natural optimist i CHOOSE to hope that things will go in the right direction. But god’s my witness there are “monsters” waiting in every step we take into the future;”monsters” that could put in risk everything that’s been done so far.The last thing that Internet services need is to have an “oligarchic” perception of things.A couple of men [companies] taking decisions for everything and everyone.Given the very nature of that field, that would be the worst thing to happen to it.Just imagine that : MS taking over yahoo. Then Apple taking over google thus taking over youtube. Then MS taking over Logi. Then go a little further and let’s say Apple taking over Amazon.Maybe MS then answers by taking over ebay and gotomeeting.com.Apple then strikes back taking over skype and on and on and on….I’d hate to see that happening
ps:Some may notice that MS taking over LOGI is not really the same as to MS taking over yahoo. This was simply an analogy. In the same way i worry about what will happen to Logi’s products once MS puts its hands upon them,i also worry about how MS people will affect yahoo’s service quality…
I heard on tv that even if microsoft buys yahoo, google’s search will still be twice as big with both of them combined. But combineing both of them would be great to compete agianst google.
Heh. So much for Yahoo’s Music Service folding into Zune Marketplace, or staying Plays For Sure - Yahoo is closing it and putting customers into the one place Microsoft may hate more than iTunes - Rhapsody!
