This is the first in a series I would like to call "2 Cent Suggestions" which I will take specific topics and suggest improvements to help make the Zune experience the best around. Now that I have had some time to play with the Zune 2.5 Spring Update, it is a welcomed necessary update, yet there are many more features Microsoft needs to add. There are other minor changes they did to the software, but I will focus on some of the bigger changes they did, followed by suggested software upgrades they should include in future updates. I am happy to say that many of the features in the 2.5 spring update were originally on my suggestion list, and can now be listed as completed updates, though there could be a bit more tweaking to make them even better.
ZUNE 2.5 UPDATED SOFTWARE FEATURES
-Gap-less playback. This is essential for DJ mixes and many albums, yet there is still an ever so slight skip between the tracks so it is not completely seamless.
-MP3 Tag editing. The previous tag editing in the Zune software was nearly unusable. The editing in Windows Media Player is still better, but the tag editing update is a huge improvement over the previous Zune software. The ability to drag and drop files between albums and genres is wonderful.
-Improved Social. You can now see your and your friends Zune cards within the Zune software, as well as send short messages to each other. Too bad I only have one other friend that has a Zune and our musical tastes are completely different.
-Auto Playlists. I am glad to see the feature back and have it carry over to the Zune hardware, though it is lacking the ability to create an auto-playlist of recently played items.
-Browse by Genre. Not much to say about this one, but I am glad this is here.
2 CENT ZUNE SOFTWARE SUGGESTIONS
-Background Podcast Downloading. Enable the Zune software to run as a service in the background downloading podcasts, so the program does not have to be open.
-Rating System. The "heart" rating system is lacking. Bring back the 5 stars rating system.
-Twist Interface. The "twist" interface is great on the Zune hardware. Why can't we have the "twist" interface for the Zune software?
-Easy Download Viewing. Add an icon in the lower-left hand side near the Zune and CD icon to display if downloads are occurring and the percentage done. If one clicks on it, it will take them to what downloads are occurring.
-Custom Backgrounds. Make it mine? Too bad I can only select a few backgrounds. I want to select my own backgrounds. Make it so when I change a background in in either my Zune Tag, Zune device or Zune software the picture is applied to the background for all.
-Past Album Art. The ability to paste album art with a right-click, not search for it on the hard drive to add it. Windows Media Player does not have this problem.
-Automatic File Management. The ability for the software to automatically manage the library by renaming, and moving files into folders to keep things organized would be a nice optional feature.
-DivX support. The Xbox 360 was recently updated to support DivX. Also, the Zune software is very particular about what MP4 formats it will find and play.
-Pink Bar Fullscreen Annoyance. When viewing video fullscreen, it always shows the bottom pink bar which is annoying and needs to be removed.
-Integration with Window Media Center. Make the Zune software sync with Windows Media Center (it claims it will in Microsoft advertising, but no one I have talked to at Microsoft knows how to do this), and make it be able to sync both standard def and high-def. Most major shows are HDTV now, so make it sync them. Have it auto-detect the presence of shows recorded in Windows Media Center.
-High Quality Ripping. Ripping needs industry standard formats such as AAC and VBR MP3 with the LAME codec for high quality sound.
-Burning Data CDs with Folder Structure. When I burn multiple podcasts/albums as a data CD, they should be burned into multiple folders. Windows Media Player does this right. Zune does not, it burns them all to the root directory and they are all mixed together.
-Frequent Updates. Don't wait six months or more to release these updates, as they need to be released more frequently.
I will list suggestions on other topics such as the hardware, marketplace, social and other features in future posts. How do you feel about the proposed software suggestions? Do you have any suggestions for the software I may have missed that would help make the Zune software the best media player around?

I totatlly ageree with the suggestions, why have DIVX work on the 360 but not the zune. Also i hate the hearts’ way to girly for me. Also i think creating folders for videos should be an option. Our music is nicely organized, but my videos, just a huuuuuuge list. I’d love to be able to organize my TV shows and movies, by season, title etc…my 2 cent idea
It does allow you to paste album art. Besides that i completely agree.
Thanks for the correction Jacob. Before Zune 2.5 one needed to find the saved album art picture on your drive instead of a right-click > paste. The Zune software does allow this now, yet warns you that you can’t remove the art, but can update it. Looks like I can move another suggestion to the completed list.
I would also like to see an "Auto Off Feature". Similar to my GPS unit in my car. When my GPS loses external power it asks whether or not to continue on battery. If there is no response, after 30 seconds it powers down. This would be great for people that leave their Zune in the car and forget to power it off. When you return to the car it automatically powers up when it senses external power and continues playing where it left off at.
All great ideas. I think a spring and fall update like the 360 would be okay with me, but I’d love to see more transparency from the Zune team - so we can see what’s going on. Maybe they need a Major Nelson type frontman.
This is a great list, I wish they would bring back the option to mark a song to be added to the Zune software when you sync or add the ability to see the filename of a track.Â
This was the only way I could locate a bad track that needed to be deleted.
I would love a mini zune player like winamp.
i would also love to see more transparnacy within the zune team. There is Ceasar’s blog over at www.zuneinsider.net. I think with major nelson we’ve been spoiled. Nobody else has a blog like his, and his podcasts. Not apple, not ps3, nobody…i just wish the zune was in the news more with more new and exciting stuff, rather then it poking its out from under the rock a few times a year!
I think you should be able to sync the of you in progress podcasts to the Zune.  For example, if I have already listened to 30 minutes of a podcast I can then sync it to my Zune and pick up where I left off.
@Phil J W: with the new 2.5 version you actually can edit your video metadeta with as result the same kind of experience like the music interface
@Vuurflits: Really??? how??
Flagging of songs, like in the old zune software.
Also, maybe an "auto-off" timer. For people who listen to music before going to sleep, and don’t have a fancy zune-branded radio thing.
ZUNE TASKBAR!!! Windows Media Player’s minimize to taskbar is AMAZING - the lack of it for zune software is one of the main reasons i took so long to switch over!
Support for Audible.com files would be great!
I am happy to report Audible support for the Zune is coming. When is another matter.
I will take all of these under advisement. Just remember though, that if you were really worth listening to you would probablly work for me!
Make Zune and Windows Media Player (along with Media Center) sync correctly…
In Windows Vienna (Windows 7), make it like *gasp* itunes, in the sense that there’s ONE media player, whatever you feel like naming it, that supports zune, and syncs itself between it and the media center software.
My 2 cents:
- Asian/Unicode characters!
- Now playing list on the Zune itself that I can add to (just like I can in the Zune software, WMP, everything else)
Zune teams absolutely needs to collaborate far more with other teams from
- Windows Media Center
- XBox
- Windows Home Server
- Windows Mobile
There are too many user scenarios that just are not enabled because these folks are not working collaboratively. At least, thats the impression one has from the outside.
Heres a quick list of just some of the missing / broken scenarios …
- Windows Home Server add-in for Zune. Sure you can store music today but there is no support for streaming of Zune Pass or DRM download content. Also, with WHS being a 24/7 device it could also automatically download new podcasts, etc… that have been subscribed too. As more and more consumers switch to laptops…a WHS based solution could offer some significant advantages & capabilities.
- Windows Media Center add-in for Zune. This add-in could do a number of things. Provide options to automatically/schedule transcoding of DVR recording for Zune (instead of doing this via the Zune client software). Provide a means to select content within the Media Center interface to wirelessly sync with a specified Zune device. Perhaps even turn the Zune device in a sophisticate remote (think Sonos).
- Windows Mobile..there needs to be a way to sync & play Zune tracks with Windows Mobile devices. I think its pretty obvious that Microsoft is planning on something around this..perhaps next year. And I wouldn’t be suprised if Live Mesh is part of the solution.
- XBox..with XNA for Zune, a future step is to allow some network game play between XBox and Zune users.
I don’t think Microsoft is stagnant at all in regards to these…especially the last two items. But I really would like to see more effort when it comes Windows Media Center and Windows Home Server.
Oh yeah, is it just me, or is there no way to synchronize your quick list? Cause that should be a priority.
