I have been bragging and going on about how much I love my new Zune Originals. I even bought a Griffin clear hard case at Target that I wanted to share as well. So it is unfortunate that I have decided to send it in for repair/replacement. I may not even get back my Red, substituting for a black. Call me petty but when I spend more than $100 on an item I want it to at least meet some quality standards when it reaches my hands or home.
After spending much time looking closely at my Zune I noticed a few issues that opened up to a few more issues. It's sad how we continuously have quality issues with products from China. I at one point believed China was trying to kill us slowly with the amount of lead products, razor blades in candy, paint in toys that metabolizes in the stomach as GHB (a.k.a date rape drug), and now my precious Zune.
I have read many times about dead pixels and dust under the screen. I have found dust under the glass, scratches from taking it apart and a broken tab on the case (all of this due to them taking it apart to perform the custom engraving.) See the pictures after the break.

Dead pixel found. It fades and grows but won't go away. I even tried running a pixel fixer video (found in the ZuneBoards) that plays Red Green Blue flashes to help combat the problem. |
|
| Access door scratches. Very difficult to see in this picture but there are scratches on the door as if a metal tool (flat head screwdriver) was forced into the door to open. This is a plastic door and only hard rubber, plastic, or wood tools should have been used to open the door. After taking the door off I got to see the most disheartening problem of all. | |
| Broken face support tab. This has to be the worst damage of all since this will eventually lead to the structural integrity of the face plate. possible even breaking the other side. The last problem was a little bit of glue around the touch pad used to hold the ring on, this was easily removed by rubbing gently with a rubber tipped tool I keep in my kit. |
My conclusion: Be sure to inspect your Zune Originals! You should not have this problem with the retail chains and if you do they will be easier to exchange. If you do not order an Artist Tattoo then you probably will receive a good Zune as well.

eeeeks, sorry to hear man, although NOTHING is perfect, still shouldnt have problems liek what your describing…whats next? Did you get an ETA on when you should be getting it back??? Keep us updated dude.
Hey Phil.. I know it sounds horrible but it really is minor. Still the QUALITY issue comes into the equation to wonder what else falls short…
The box is leaving Texas and once I receive and return it, possible a week or two. I will mostly wait for when i get it back to report on the grusome details.
Sorry to hear about your bad luck Adam, but then again, as I said, I too am on my third zune originals. I love the art, but in the future i’m going to stick to local stores where I can do a quick return if I run into problems.
I have the same problems, dust under the screen and some of the glossy paint is coming off on the top left side . we want quality Ms. Quality!!!
Sorry to hear that. I’ll be sure to examine mine when it arrives. How is the Griffin iClear case? Better than the Belkin acrylic case? I want to get a case for my Zune 80 that’s on the way, and didn’t know about the Griffin until i read this article.Â
Hey John. The Belkin is a really nice case. Especially if you can get it for $20.00 or less. I would have gone with the Belkin since it has a kick stand and belt clip. Couldnt find it in stores so I went with the Griffin.
David Tucker on ZuneThoughts wrote an article about the belkin:

Man that kinda sucks…..The only issue I had with my original was some minor scratching to the design….I decided it wasn’t worth sending it all the way back….No dead pixels or dust under the screen though and definitely no broken pieces…..:/
They’d better send you another red one with the same design…That’s what you paid for
Shado… Let me forward a letter of recommendation to J Allard on your behalf. You obviously know what marketing and customer service stradegy means to the business dynamics. Amen.. But I will probably settle for whatever I get as long as it seems new.
Thanks for the article Adam. I have seen the Belkin in stores here in Ontario, Canada for $35, but just found it on amazon.ca for $25… so perhaps I’ll order that one. Thanks for the great website for a Canadian Zune newbie!Â
That is really awful about your Original.Â
My nephew is turning 1 tomorrow, and I wanted to send him some new toys. I have looked all over Target & Wal-mart, and all of the toys are made in China. I couldn’t even find 1 that wasn’t. So, I opted for some cool clothes instead. The whole China-toy thing still makes me nervous.Â
I got a black Zune 80 Original with the Artist Series engraving and I haven’t had any problems, especially the ones you listed. It is not all of the artist series Zunes.
Its aweful Heatwave but like JawaKing said its not all of them. But you find alot of these horror stories and I just reported the fact that its true. There are some quality standard issues that need to be looked into. Raise the bar…
About the whole China toy thing. China is probably out to get us, using these ‘toys’ to do it. I like what my friend’s dad said about it. He said to my friend, when he asked his dad about it, that China is putting a small bomb in every toy so that one day all they have to do is push a button and destroy the U.S.
So let me get this straight, you returned your Zune and it came back damaged? Or you haven’t sent it back yet. My input: Hey why don’t you contact Microsoft instead of blogging it up passive agressively…
Hey Ace, no not passive aggressively.. The zune came directly from Zune Originals fresh out of the box with these issues.  The issue of quality has been well documented, look in any forum. The zune has since been returned pending service. I am just blogging over the fact that it has happened to me but not all Zunes have these issues.. But thanks for reading, its always good to have a ZuneBoard zunie in the house.
I went through two Zune80’s because of dust and water spots under the glass. I finally got fed up with it and bought one locally for more. Having a picture on the back that I’ll hardly look at isn’t worth the frustration of a 4 week RMA process.
Actually Chiablo, I am really surprised with the speed it takes for them to handle issues like this. Im just disappointed that there are issues with the quality from China.
Wow. I feel sorry for you, but at least now I know I`m not the only one. I went through 6 PSPs because they were all defective. Almost every electronic I buy is, or was defective, including my Zune. lol
