Since the 120gb Zune has been confirmed by Cesar as being in the works, now would be a good time to think about requests for future Zunes. It might be kind of late, but we've provided plenty of input so we can hope that these make it into the upcoming version's plans.
What do you want to see changed with Zune?
My biggest request is for a Zune to be available in the blue color that you see in the closest sidebar to this post. Kind of a aquamarine/teal color.

>Multiple tagging sources (freedb, gracenote, Amazon, etc…) A number of times I’ve slapped a cd in to rip that Windows Media player (or the zune software) won’t recognize but rippers such as CDEX, QCD will grab it just fine.
> better performance from the zune software.
1) I’d like to see the flash Zunes have a bigger screen.
2) It would be nice to have some dedicated buttons: i.e. Volume control. When scrolling thru the menus while listening to music, there’s no easy way to control the volume.
3) tilt technology. I’d like to see my photos in portrait or landscape - not just landscape.
4) View Photos by tags in addition to folders
5) Fix it so I don’t have to traverse SO many subfolders to view photos. Most Photo folders should be at the root level.
6) Be able to use the Zune as an external hard drive/USB flash drive.
7) audio books
8 ) be able to hear an optional audible alert to know when a fellow zuner is near by and another optional alert when someone attempts to send you something over the wireless.
- AVI support (at least in the software)
- Hardware support for the posted video specs. I can’t count the number of times I’ve transcoded a video and tried to sync it, only to find that the software wants to transcode it again.
- Better video transcoding. Transcoding with the software usually fails with no useful error messages.
- A name for the software. Sounds silly, but iPod and iTunes are not just names, they are words people use when describing PMP hardware and software. Microsoft’s response: the Zune and the Zune software. Zune’s a good name for the player, but “the software” is not a good name for the software.
- Less focus on the Social. Fix the hardware and software, then worry about the Social.
- Improve support. Telling users to ask other users for help on zune.net is wrong.
they should follow Jaxim advice. That *TEAM* is just dumb !
Jaxim hits most of them right on the head. Audio books, portable hard drive, more memory flash players, and of course…..the color blue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What does MS have against blue???
Some sort of simple document reader (like support for tabs, bold/italics/underscore, alignment, and maybe bullets) with paged and auto-scroll view options, as well as bookmarks to save your place, so you can use the Zune to read ebooks, documents you’ve made, etc. while on the go, is what I want the most.
Don’t require the device to reboot after you back out of XNA software.
Add the current time to the top right of every screen, nice and small, so you don’t have to navigate to the Zune Clock app, wait for it to load, and wait for it to reboot after you back out.
A way to sort/group the albums by Artist after choosing a Genre.
1. Larger Wifi range.
2. Better screen resolution
3. Touch screen model available
4. More competitive pricing
5. CLOCK!!!
6. Built in Apps
7. Ditch the 3 play rule for Zune pass owners
8. Ability to listen to music while transfering songs
9. Ability to remove songs off a quick list(duh…)
10. More colors.
[x
Zune Generation 3.
Cant imagine it
well i kinda can
with what soccer said
Ok here i go
1.TOUCH! Please oh please, it’s so pretty..
2 Optimize the wifi, if not web browser (which might be hard with minimal input) at least rss feeds, on the older zunes. I DO want a web browser on the new Zune.
3. Wi-fi music store: not really for the music but for the over-the-air updating of podcasts without need of computer.
4 More colours- ever hear of silver?? My laptop is black, my psp is black, my xbox is black, my Creative Zen Vision:M was black! I don’t want a black Zune!!!!! And I don’t want colours like green, blue or red because i really don’t buy into the individualist marketing approach by every tech company under the sun. Silver is still stylish.
5. Built in apps- The new Zune should come with the organizer functionality of any normal cell phone eg. stopwatch, timer, calendar, alarm, notes/to-do list, calculator
6. Games and applications built into the Zune software. It would make them much easier to synch/deploy.
7. An option to view photos in landscape or portrait (preferably an accelerometer but not necessarily)- You go to the trouble of getting a photo in 240×320 to use as a background, you go to view it and it’s all scrunched up and tiny because it’s in landscape mode! Anyone else feel my pain?
8. More durable buttons- my hold switch is getting pretty loose, and my touch pad isn’t as responsible as it used to be.
9. More information when synching. On the Zune Player you should be able to see exactly what you do when you go into status under device in the Zune software ie. Now Synching, Just Added, Just Removed. This is mainly for wireless synch.
10. I know it’s unlikely to be made but i would love a light program that you could run in the background with just a system tray icon that could download podcasts and synch them to the Zune.
NO! You will get brown again though!
I really liked the Zune 2, and I’d like to see mostly performance improvements from the next gen.
- Who ever listens to AM radio? Keep it out, it would just be an unnecessary extra for the Zune team to support.
- Zune software should come with device (on disc), and children should not have to have parent authentication to join the social (they should though, to access certain features that parents may restrict), since, like me, some people only want the account to subscribe to podcasts.
- Flash Zunes could be a little bigger, not a priority though.
- Keep the buttons the way they are, simple is good and dedicated controls like volume would just clog the h-interface.
- Don’t bother with tilt technology (would degrade battery performance), a ‘rotate’ feature right under ‘zoom’ for images would suffice.
- Viewing photos by tags would be cool, especially if you can view them as a tag cloud.
- To Jaxim, for saying “Fix it so I don’t have to traverse SO many subfolders to view photos. Most Photo folders should be at the root level.” This is your problem, you need to re-arrange the folder hierarchy for your photos on your computer. I had a Gigabeat S that would put any folders past 3 subfolders on the root and it was THE most annoying thing about the device.
- Using the device as an external drive would be okay, I doubt I’d use it though.
- Audio book support = waste of time. People just need to put the genre as podcast and they’re set.
- Alerts: YES YES YES!!! There are several people at my school who I see on the ‘nearby’ screen but I never see (when they’ve all got their Zunes in their pockets, how can I tell them apart from the iPod users?). Audible alerts for when people come nearby or try to send you something would be perfect, with the option to turn sounds off completely and to block just certain people.
- It would be very nice to say ‘auto-accept all incoming transfers’, as long as the ability to listen to music WHILE transferring content was introduced.
- Equipping the software to read and convert from almost any video codec (as many as VLC can would be nice).
- Document viewing would be nice. There are many times that I wish I could get e-mail, calendar, contacts, an RSS on my Zune, as well as doc, html, and other files. I don’t want a full interactive web browser, I don’t want to be able to manage or compose e-mail on the device, I just want to use it as a viewer (what it’s intended for, a media presenting device).
- Larger wifi range would kill battery performance, keep that the way it is.
- Better screen res on the big devices WOULD be nice!
- NO TOUCH SCREENS! The Zune pad is just like you have a touch screen, except that you don’t get dirty fingerprints all over the screen, and it’s matte so unlike glass touch screens it feels nice and soft under your finger.
- If the price was lowered then they would have to use lower quality hardware.
- Want a clock? GET A WATCH. The UI is very clean at the moment and doesn’t need a clock cluttering it up.
- Built in apps? No way! This device is for presenting to you your media, NOT interacting with it. Want apps? Get a blackberry.
- Removing songs from quick list would be nice (Sansa e20 series is only player I’ve seen this feature on so far.)
- Like I said before, NO web browser. It would provide unnecessary clutter.
- For those who want games: they ARE coming. And not like they are now with the XNA and the Visual C# and the compiling, that’s just for DEVELOPERS to test their games before the actual easy to use game platform comes out for everybody.
- Brown would be nice.
- KILL THE NEW DESIGN. The glossy front is way uglier than the matte one. The metal ring around the Zune Pad looked trippy and stylish. The black back is ok, but it should still be about as metallic as the silver back was, like reflective but still matte(I can’t really tell if it is this way from the photos). Also, the wifi antenna still looks ugly.
- I would love to have a more dynamic zoom feature, and the ability to zoom up to 200% on images up to 1000×1000.
I’d like to see the software allow the user to choose what audio output they want to use.
