Zune Update Problems

[Updated: 9/18/08 - Added Zune media collection reset tool]
Hopefully everyone has smoothly gotten their Zune software to update without any issues and we are all busy spending time playing with them. But are there any of you having problems with the Zune update?
There are a few update requirements that are needed for the new Zune software to work, such as:
- .NET
- Doctor Watson 2.0
- MS XML
- Windows Update Agent
- XMLLite
- Wireless LAN API
- Image Mastering API
- An unknown knowledge base download KB933720
- Windows Media Framework
What else can you do? Check after the break.
First start off by:
- Making sure you have an active Internet connection, a 'Genuine' valid copy of Windows and it is up-to-date via the Windows Update site.
- Restart your computer to ensure that any installations have completed. Or you may see a message like the one below:
- Disconnect your Zune device before doing anything.
- Close the Zune software if you have it open. (This is all the easy part)
- Download the Zune 3 update package [64 Bit version] from the Zune.net site. If you run into the following error:
- Download the complete Zune, (32 & 64 Bit) software which includes all the packages needed for the system to work.
- You should be able to successfully install everything and connect your Zune device to perform the handheld update via the software.
- If all else fails, check the Zune official customer forum, the knowledge base, try another computer and of course, contact support.
There are also some other tools to use:
Zune Device Diagnostic Tool
Codec Installation Package
Critical Update for Media Player
DRM Security Component Update
Zune media collection reset tool
Hope this helps, but I hope them most of us haven't had any problems at all.

KB933720 is needed only for Win Home Server…
At the end of installing the 3.0 software Windows bluescreened with a Framework module being the culprit…after reboot everything worked though, installed the device update with no problems.
No problems here… just make sure XP is up to date. Run windows update regularly and you’ll be ok.
were there any unannounced updates to the software/firmware? Changes too small to be included the press release, but huge in terms of fans want-lists?
No one else? Damn.

Software installed fine, device updated fine, software runs fine.
As soon as I connected the Zune and tried to sync a podcast the software crashed. If I have the Zune connected, the software will try to run and will crash repeatedly after attempting the sync. If the device is disconnected and reconnected the software seems to run fine until I try to sync again. Lather, rinse, repeat.
ISSUE 1: I have been noticing that the my Zune seems less responsive (sluggish) and even worse when using wireless marketplace or navigating while connected to the computer.
ISSUE 2: So then I started playing Texas holdem and went to exit the game. My Zune froze so I restarted it. And then the wonderful message pops up: #5 Contact Support. I restarted again, #4 Clearing Contect. So I waited until I got #2 Open PC and reinstall firmware. Hopefully this is just because of the connect/disconnect when running games.
ISSUE 3: None, i love the new idle screen saver that displays artist information and play counts especially when you are viewing marketplace content. AWESOME!
I have Windows Update set to run every night at 2AM so my PC is up to date. The Zune 3.0 software crashed with blue screen of death. After rebooting, the Zune software keeps telling me I have to reboot before using it. I’m going to try installing the .NET Framework. Grrr….
Well my upgrade wasn’t that easy. What i did to get it working was first downloaded the new Zune 3.0 software from the Zune.net website. Then for some reason the download didn’t install, so I went into the old software, and clicked update, and that did it!
But I must say that the new 3.0 software is extremely slow! I have a decent laptop with 2 GB ram and a nice processor, but it really is slow. Our big desktop runs it real smooth though. Hope they fix that!
everything went well except my playcount is not updating.
13 hours ago was my last update.
Will someone please help me? I’ve got Windows XP SP2, but when I try to install the software it says “Can”t connect to Microsoft Update.” What’s wrong? Please help me, I really want to enjoy version 3.0! Thanks in advance.
Since updating, the progress bar for songs has stopped working. The songs play fine, but the bar always stays at 0:00. Is this happening to anyone else?
Thanks Mike. Hey wetworker plays should be updating again, there was a problem but it has since been resolved but additional delays may occur while everyone gets caught up.
Ian I havent heard of or seen that one yet. Sounds like one of the sub-packages is not working properly. May require a windows update to get. (Also see below)
GameGotter try downloading the complete Zune software package at: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=104738 (Ian, this may also contain the updates you need. Download, run the application to extract the software, run the Zunesetup.  Please note any error code and LinkID# provided if you encounter an error.
Ian: I am having the same problem. My ‘time elapsed’ is always at 0:00 even when it is playing.
Also, if i pause my zune and skip forward a track, the zune does not stay paused; it starts playing the next track even though the pause icon is still in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
my playcounts aren’t updating either …
My firmware isn’t updating. Every time I try to update it I get this:
An unknown error occurred. For more info, click Web Help.
Error code:
C00D11CD
(80200011)
I went to the web help screen and I did everything it asked but it’s still not working. What can I do?
I’m getting the same problem as Zamish, a few posts above. When trying to sync, my zune player ends up crashing after a few hundred files, every time. I’ve rebooted and wiped my player several times, reinstalled the software (the big ~260 Mo file), tried uninstalling with unzoone, tried manually syncing so it doesn’t get to sync ~2800 files in one gulp… nothing solves it. My zune stops responding (error code C00D124D) after 400-500 files, and I’ve encountered this error over 15 times now. My problems have started since the new firmware update. I just can’t enjoy my zune now. Anyone else got a similar problem?
I have been doing some research and trying to get myself familiar with the Zune sync issues. This is like a whole new can of worms…
Usually cleary the Zune device completely, (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927001/en-us) works to get rid of everything and then you reconnect to the USB and it reinstalls the firmware. This is what happened to me during the update to Z3.
Please make sure you are following the correct instructions to clear the firmware.

My Zune froze up, so I shut it down. But It refused to turn on. I waited a couple days, and then it finally turned on. After listening to TWO songs, it froze again, so I shut it off. Once again, it wouldn’t turn on. 24 hours later, It needed charging (It was fully charged when it failed). This had happened to two other members of my family with their Zunes.
My zune kept freezing up on me. Now it doesn’t work at all. any one know what to do.
My zune kept freezing up on me. In the middle of a song it stopped working all together. Can anyone help me with this problem.
my zune froze up while i was selecting a song so i turned it off and now it wont turn back on no matter what i do. i tried plugging it into my computer and my computer acknowledges that it is plugged in but it wont come up on the program or anything. what can i do?
Hey Stephanie, don’t keep plugging it into power sources. First try restarting the device by making sure the hold is turned off, hold down Back+Up on the dpad. It should restart, however if it does not then let the device die down first, can take up to 24 hours.
Once it has enough charge it should return to normal operation.
Stephanie I just confirmed that the first half should restart it and the battery icon will be displayed, just make sure you hold it down for 10 seconds or more.
I just had the same thing happen to mine cause it was dead from my trip to Halloween Horror Nights this weekend.
I am having the same problem as Zamish. Whenever I try to sync either my or my husband’s 30gig zunes, I get this error.  It happens both with the usb and wirelessly. Both Zune work fine on other computers. For some reason, my Vista laptop won’t sync. Help?

Hey Hotaru, problems with Visual Basic runtime. Is your machine up-to-date via the Windows Update site or function from your System Properties?
Make sure your machine is updated, follow the below link to update the runtime and restart, let me know if it works.
I have also started a new forum topic on Z3 Update Issues here.
You can download and install the Visual Basic Runtime files located here: Microsoft VB Runtime 6 sp3
Zune staff just got back to me. Turns out you have to disconnect your computer from the internet, open Zune and then plug in your device. It will sync fine if you do that. They said that there is a fix that will be in the next Zune update. I’m glad to have music again! Thanks again and I hope that this will someone.
Thanks Hotaru, this should help alot of people. i wish Zune support would just add this to the knowledge base rather than make us run around with our heads cut off.
I wonder if Hotaru sent msft a letter via usps because i cant find (through the pages of dead ends and loops that is the knowledge base) a link to actually contact customer support.
I installed the ADVERTISED 3.0 Zune 64 bit software on Saturday (10/4) and it completely crashed my new quad core HP media center computer. The system recovery took over 24 hours of endless backup and wiped my Dark Age of Camelot files, which I now have to download again.
I am afraid to even try and download 3.0 at this time.
Update was smooth.. But afterwords i notticed that the count down on the song “Time started - Time left” status thing… It stopped working.. Does anyone have any suggestions of wht happened?
And its a 30G
I updated my Zune (30G) a couple of nights ago. Everything went fine. I got through two songs, my zune froze, then the screen went black. It wouldn’t respond to ANYTHING. I pushed every button a million times and nothing happened. So I left it overnight, and the next morning when I pressed the center button the exclamation point popped up. It shouldn’t have, because I charged it for probably four hours the night before. It happened again yesterday. How do I fix it cause I really don’t want to go buy a new Zune.

I have the same problem, any clues as what to do to fix it?
Ian & brandon w, same prob with my zune. Tracking bar stoppes but song plays fine. When it happens i reset, then it’s fine but it will eventully start again. Any suggestions?
My zune screen says NG in big red letters? It wont do anything… I tried restarting it and it just goes back to the same thing. What can I do? Thanks guys
My zune was working fine a 2 days ago but now when I try to connect it, the software reads “No Zune Connected” I’ve already tried using every method using different usb ports, soft reboot, reinstalling the software and everything in between. It just doesn’t connect, it still charges but now i cant even get new music on it. I’ve heard of reformating it and tried it myself but that doesnt work either, all of my files are still there people say to do the soft reboot and when the screen goes black, to hold the back button and the play/pause button and others say to also hold the center button I did both and nothing happens. Please, if someone knows another way let me know.         Â
-Thanks
I almost forgot to mention, I have a 30g white zune if that helps in anyway
my zune won’t start and i dunno why, i never really did anything to it, i just installed the latest version, and the last time i use it was when i was driving, and now when i try to use it, nothing comes up. :((((. please help.
Include me in the increasing list of the people whose Zune’s duration bars doesn’t move, not to mention the pausing problem Brandon W. and Freddie has.
Hey guys, I had the same problem with the time/duration thingy not moving but song playing fine. and the pausing then switching tracks and it playing right up again…Â I don’t know if this is what fixed it, but it seemed to work…
i went to use it at work the other day, and it died. i plugged it in..it reset.. I have not had that problem since… hope this helps.
I have a black 120gb.
