Article Wrap Up

Here are links to some of the recently buried posts here...

I am working on 2 more battery tests this weekend too. I have ripped one CD at 192k and I put it in mp3 format on the Zune 30, Zune 80, and the iPod Classic 80 for another complete drain battery test of all 3 of them. I also have a movie I encoded queued up when that test is done.

I am going to also be taking a look at the DLO Transdock Micro soon.

    1. Nicer Comment posting form. Simple enough

    2. I am still tweaking this one, but you can rate comments. Thumbs down for stupid comments and up for good comments!

I promise, that is it for today. No posting until at least 10pm today. (easy to say since I am walking out the door to eat turkey!)

  • Happy Thanksgiving from GotZune?

thanksgiving I don't sleep much, let alone take a day off from the online fun, but Thanksgiving is one day I normally kick my feet up and enjoy. I have so much to be thankful for in life and I am sure all of you do too.

What is the history of Thanksgiving in United States?
The initial "Thanksgiving" feast, held in 1621, was really a traditional English harvest celebration. The Pilgrims shared it with the Native Americans because they had taught the colonists to plants crops and hunt wild game. Without the Native Americans, the Pilgrims may not have survived the harsh winter and been able to celebrate their first harvest of plentiful crops in the New World. The colonists' first harvest feast lasted for three days. Food was served all at once, instead of in courses, so people ate whatever they pleased in the order that they desired. The more important members at the feast were given the best pieces of meat, while the rest of the diners ate whatever was closest to them. Since the Pilgrims didn't use forks or plates, they ate their meal straight off the table with spoons, knives or their fingers. They used large napkins to wipe their hands and also wrapped it around food when it was too hot to hold.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my wife and kids for putting up with this hobby. I would like to thank all the staff that help out around here. (way too many to name, but I am so appreciate of all of them and their passion) The second most important part of the team is you guys reading this, without all of you, there would be no community. Trust me, I would still do it even if I had nobody around to read it. I do that already in the shower, I am almost ready for American Idol. Right! Lastly, I want to thank all the companies out there for making all this cool gear we get to talk about!

I will most likely post more tonight and maybe some tomorrow night, but I plan to go PC/Email free for most of the day tomorrow to spend time with my family.

Have a Great Thanksgiving and Good Luck on Black Friday!

  • A Little Unexpected Downtime, again

    This time for great reasons.

In Aximsite's peak, we were up to 3 servers to handle the load.  Since the Axim has been discontinued, Aximsite's forums (now Aximsite/Mobilitysite Forums) have declined since we peaked at an Alexa Ranking of 5000 or so. That said, the need and financial means for 3 servers has gone away. We dropped down to 2 servers earlier this year and down to 1 in the last couple months. The one server is a kick ass server though. It has 2 dual core processors, 4g of RAM, and all the other fixings.

The problem is that we just are not ready to drop to one server. With Mobilitysite getting more and more traffic and my other sites like SECTalk.com, Gotzune.com, and others... we still need the power. Most of the time, the one server was ok, but I hate to have any slow time on the sites, so we are readding a new server. It will take some time to get the sites separated between the two. Hopefully I can get started on this Monday after the Thanksgiving festivities.

Hopefully we won't experience any addition downtime in the meanwhile and the move of some of the sites to the new server should be transparent to most.

  • Zune 80 Inventory Tracker

Because of the Zune 80 supply problems, are you constantly checking the online stores to see when you can order a Zune 80?

The site NowInStock.net makes things easier for you. They have a dedicated page for the Zune 80 and it will report when any Zune 80s start selling at a major online retailer.

     NowInStock.net

The site not only tracks Zunes, but it can track other hard to find items, i.e. "Guitar Hero III",  Wii, etc., which may be convenient during this holiday gift season.

  • As we all know from reading tech and Zune-specific blogs, there has been a shortage of Zune 80s.

Well, it seems like the general media is getting wind of the Zune and its limited appearance. Yahoo News has an article describing the situation.

As a Zune owner and fan, I am glad to hear some positive news about this Microsoft gadget starting to reach a wide audience.

So what Podcasts are you subscribed to?

I thought I would introduce myself to the gotZune community in my first gotZune post by posting a question.

What podcasts do you subscribe to?

I've never really explored the world of podcasting, so when I heard people were ecstatic that the new Zune software and firmware supported podcasting, I thought I would have to give it a try, and surprisingly, I found myself liking some of the podcasts that I found.

Currently you can use the Zune cards to find people with similar music tastes and find more songs that you might like. Unfortunately, the Zune cards don't yet support doing the same thing with podcasts, (although, I imagine eventually they will), so I thought it might be interesting to find out what the readers here are subscribed to and see if any of us can find some new cool podcasts.

These are a few podcasts that I subscribe to which I really enjoy:

TWIT - "This Week In Tech" - Did you ever watch TechTV? Many of the people from that channel sit down and discuss the latest tech news of the week. It's great to hear Leo Laporte again. It would be great if I could find a video podcast that had Leo.

Best of YouTube - Like podcasting, I never really explored YouTube very much. I've never really had the time. Wouldn't it be great if someone picked the best and funniest things on YouTube and made a video podcast of it? Guess what, they do.  It's only a weekly podcast, but it's great.

National Geographic Video Shorts - I really love the video podcasts and what's better than national geographic video?! National Geographic has some of the best educational and entertaining video and photography so it's great to watch a few short clips so you can feel yourself getting smarter.

Battlestar Gallactica - I bet a high percentage of Zune owners watch the new Battlestar Gallactica show. The producer of the show, Ronald D Moore, has a podcast after each episode discussing the behind the scenes of a week's episode.  This past week, I had the great fortune of going to a Zune sponsored advanced screening of some pre-season episodes of Battlestar Galactica, so I can't wait until the producer creates a podcast about these episodes so I can find out what the creative team were thinking when they made these episodes.

So what are some of your subscribed podcasts?

  • Got Zune Site Enhancements

I have spent the evening doing what I love, listening to music and setting up new features. The best part of running websites is the setting up and tweaking.

So, what did I do tonight?

    • I changed the width of the Photo Gallery that hosts the backgrounds and Zune Image Galleries
    • I enabled user accounts for the Gallery. You can sign up, log in, and submit photos and backgrounds.
    • I added a topsite list. The only one being updated for Zune has gone offline due to spammers and I figured I would throw one up. Sign up fellow Zune site owners.

I am having a ball. Welcome to the Social!
